If you earned income in Korea during the tax year, you may owe Korean income tax. This applies to most visa holders including E-2 (foreign language teachers), E-7 (specialists), F-4 (overseas Koreans), F-6 (marriage migrants), and D-8 (business). Filing window: May 1 to May 31 each year via Hometax (hometax.go.kr).

Who must file?

Residents of Korea (in-country 183+ days) are taxed on worldwide income. Non-residents (under 183 days) are taxed only on Korean-source income. E-2 teachers, freelancers receiving 3.3% withholding, business owners, and anyone with side income must file.

Tax rates 2026

Progressive: 6% up to KRW 14M, 15% up to 50M, 24% up to 88M, 35% up to 150M, 38% up to 300M, 40% up to 500M, 42% up to 1B, 45% over 1B. Plus 10% local tax surcharge.

Tax treaty benefits

USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and 90+ countries have double-tax treaties with Korea. E-2 teachers from some countries get 2-year exemption (check treaty). File Tax Treaty Resident Certificate at NTS.
